Performative photography and male performance of flower growers from Atlixco, Mexico.
In this article, I present two performance photography experiences with flower growers in Atlixco, Mexico. The first took place in a nursery, and the second in a botanical garden. In both cases, the participants posed, expressing, through poses and gestures, what it means to be "male flower growers." Through these experiences, I reflect on the performative possibilities of photography, as well as performative aspects of masculinity in these work settings. In this context, I propose performance photography as a research-creation practice that contributes to weakening photographer/photographed dichotomies, through staging and poses determined by the subjects of the photographs, and by generating spaces for dialogue around the photos.
